East Metro to Launch Transit Study to Link Washington County, Western Wisconsin to Saint Paul

9:30 a.m.

The Alternatives Analysis Study is set to start this fall will examine potential transit modes, including light rail, bus rapid transit and commuter rail; potential routes with estimated ridership; construction and operation costs, and economic and environmental impacts along the Gateway Corridor including connections to Minneapolis and Eau Claire.

Key facts about the Gateway Corridor:

  • According to 2010 projections, more than 300,000 people live along the corridor.
  • By 2030, the corridor’s population is expected to grow by nearly 30 percent. In addition to the population growth, more than 30,000 jobs are expected to be added to the corridor – adding more commuters to an already congested corridor.
  • Today, more than 150,000 vehicles travel from the St. Croix River to downtown Saint Paul – making the corridor one of the most congested arteries into both downtown Saint Paul and Minneapolis without adequate transit service options.
  • By developing a reliable, consistent fixed transit line from downtown Saint Paul to the eastern suburbs, communities can adequately plan for future residential and job growth within the corridor.
