Cedar Avenue Transitway
Cedar Avenue Transitway is the region’s first bus rapid transitway (BRT) serving the Cities of Lakeville, Apple Valley, Eagan and Bloomington and providing access to the Mall of America and downtown Minneapolis. BRT combines the flexibility of buses with the frequency, speed, and reliability of light rail transit. Buses operate on existing highways with traffic signal priority and may have the advantages of bus-only lanes and enhanced stations to achieve a service similar to light rail transit.
The Cedar Avenue Transitway is 22 miles in length and will connect to the Hiawatha LRT at the Mall of America and will have 9 stations at full build-out. Currently, the transitway is in Preliminary Engineering and station development activities.
The total estimated cost is $167.4 million for full build out. Phase I implementation is estimated at $38.1million. This estimate does not include the costs to roadway improvements to accommodate shoulder running bus operations. Dakota County is pursuing additional state and federal funds to ensure BRT operations in 2010.
